Religious underpinnings of the right

I’ve read a number of accounts about the mixture of right-wing politics and religious fundamentalism in a number of places (I fully recommend Manuel Castell’s "The power of identity: The information Age: Economy, society and culture, Volume II (The information age).", which hasa chapter that delas with that among other things).

But I read today a piece on the Huffington Post that is both detailed and terrifying. Just to give an example, an excerpt of a speech by Ted Cruz: "When you hear this attack on religion, it’s not really an attack on religion. The fundamental basis is this. Socialism requires that government becomes your God. That’s why they have to destroy your concept of God. They have to destroy all your loyalties except loyalty to the government. That’s what’s behind homosexual marriage. It’s really more about the destruction of the traditional family."

This is very ignorant and paranoid, but extremely dangerous as well. And the guy who uttered these sentences is not a Joe Nobody, but a US senator…

Read the whole thing, and be very concerned: The Theology of Government Shutdown: Christian Dominionism.
