How to spot a crackpot

Maggie Koerth-Baker has a post in BoingBoing on the difficulties for lay people (and we are all lay people in many more areas than we are experts) to separate legitimate science from certain types of wild speculation (or worse). This is something that goes to the heart of my concerns (see, for instance http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0277953612004443), and I fully agree with her rules for spotting the BS (my terms, not hers). I fully endorse those, go read them.
